My Review: I enjoyed this acidic and fresh-tasting wine. It definitely has a bold flavor that many other Sauvignon Blancs do not. Fruity notes of apples, kiwi, and cherries exploded in my mouth when tasting this wine. It was very balanced during the finish, and I definitely wanted to drink more. I would absolutely drink this wine again!

Tasting- Cupcake Moscato

Name: Cupcake Moscato d'Asti
Variety: 100% Moscato
Region: Asti
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $13.99

Winery Review: Our Moscato is vibrant and expressive with floral notes that dominate with hints of peach and flavors of tropical fruits and lychee. It is a soft and luscious wine with just a hint of effervescence to tickle the palate and balance the sweetness. With bright fruit flavors and finesse, it’s reminiscent of a pineapple right-side up cupcake.

My Review: I found this wine to be incredibly sweet, almost too sweet. But the fresh fruity flavors of pineapple and apples were quite appealing and the wine was very drinkable. I also detected a surprisingly wide range of floral notes in the nose. This wine would be especially great to drink on a summer afternoon, but I would definitely drink it again because it was so sweet and easy to drink.

I tasted this wine with cheese and crackers before dinner, and the soft cheddar cheese definitely played a role in exposing all the fragrant floral and fruit notes of the wine. The pineapple notes became especially apparent after I ate a bit of cheese. This pairing was a good combo for me!

Tasting- The Naked Grape Pinot Noir

Name: The Naked Grape Pinot Noir
Variety: 75% Pinot Noir, & Tempranillo, Grenache, Alicante Bouchet
Region: Modesto, California
Country: USA
Year: Non-Vintage
Price: $9.00

Winery Review: This medium-bodied wine exhibits aromas and flavors of blueberry and black cherry.

My Review: This wine ended up being very drinkable. Notes of smooth, dark fruity flavors are appealing to the palate. I tasted plums and black currants while drinking this wine, and a bit of a sour cherry type taste. It was pretty light and fruity for a red wine, which I enjoyed considering I don't like many reds yet. It was not my favorite wine, but I would drink it again, and it was a bargain!

Tasting- Gato Negro Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: Gato Negro Cabernet Sauvignon
Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Central Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2011
Price: $10.00
Winery Review: A generous and inviting bouquet dominated by aromas of blackberry and black currants with underlying notes of tobacco, mint and licorice adding a layer of complexity and depth. Lush fruit flavors and soft, rounded tannins fill the palate.

My Review: I found this to be a very intense red wine. I absolutely detected notes of peppermint and spice while savoring this wine. Plums and red raspberries are also abundant in this wine. Very rich and full flavors excite the palate. I would like to try this wine again, possibly with some Italian dishes to see what other flavors come out.

I tasted this wine on its own without food.

Tasting- Starborough Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Starborough Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Marlborough
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2011
Price: $12.99

Winery Review: Our 2011 Starborough Sauvignon Blanc has layers of citrus and tropical fruit with hints of fresh green characters, which make the wine a true expression of the Marlborough region. Flavors of passion fruit, guava and kiwi layered over a citrus framework culminate in a crisp, approachable palate.

My Review: This wine was a great buy, especially considering its price! It is highly acidic and has light notes of fresh pineapple and mangoes. The fruit is very crisp and surprising to the palate, but not enough to punch you in the mouth. I found this Sauvignon Blanc to be very refreshing and I think it would be a great summertime wine- I would definitely drink it again!

Winery Visit - Port of Leonardtown Winery

Last weekend, on February 16, 2013, I was at home for the weekend in Maryland and my parents and I decided to take a tour and do a tasting at the local Port of Leonardtown Winery. This was my first trip to a winery, so I was excited when my mom suggested it. Southern Maryland is not very well-known for its wines, but my family and I learned a lot about small-scale wineries and were also pleasantly surprised by the wines that Port of Leonardtown had to offer!

Port of Leonardtown Winery is located within Southern Maryland in Leonardtown, Maryland. The winery sits by Port of Leonardtown Park at the start of a three-mile canoe and kayak trail that leads into Leonardtown Wharf, a beautiful nature spot. Visiting the winery is a perfect complement to a day of local sight-seeing or launching a kayak for a trip through Port of Leonardtown Park's wildlife sanctuary. In 2007, The Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative was established with the goal of developing a world-class wine-growing region. The Port of Leonardtown Winery is a cooperative effort between the Town of Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, and the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative. Although none of the grapes for the wines are grown on-site, Port of Leonardtown is dedicated to bringing its customers the best wine from the best growers in the area. Port of Leonardtown is one of a few cooperative wineries in the U.S. A wide range of wines are offered- including one fruit wine made from Maryland apples! The tasting room is open from 12 - 6 PM Wednesday through Sunday, and 12 - 9 PM on the first Fridays of every month.

After the grapes are delivered to the winery,  the pictures below show where they are crushed, processed, stored, and finally bottled. Port of Leonardtown is a relatively small winery, but the owners are extremely dedicated to doing what they love- making good wine.

Port of Leonardtown Winery offered a wine tasting that included trying 6 wines for $5, which my parents and I did. Our guide, Connie, was attentive and extremely helpful when answering all of my questions- a fantastic guide! My parents chose more dry, red wines while I chose to sample a variety of wines. And I just had to try the famous McIntosh Apple wine! I ended my tasting with the very sweet Autumn Frost dessert wine, and was thoroughly impressed. The winery even provided my parents and I with a card that listed all the wines and had space for you to write down your tasting notes. I sampled the following 6 wines:
My parents and me tasting wines!

  • McIntosh Run: A sweeter white wine, I enjoyed this light and fruity apple wine. This was my first apple wine ever. Unsurprisingly, it smelled strongly of apples and I also detected peaches. The wine was very acidic and crisp, and the zing I tasted when it hit my palate was surprisingly pleasant. I would definitely drink this apple wine again!
  • Wicomico Rose: This Rose wine was slightly sour and very bold. I detected notes of blackberries and raspberries, and the finish was very balanced and appealing. It was not my favorite wine, but tasted decent and I would try it again with Maryland seafood, as our guide Connie recommended.
  • Cabernet Franc Reserve: This dry red wine was part of Port of Leonardtown's Premium Wine Collection. It had a very strong scent of dark berries and plums and also had intense woody and oaky notes. The tannic structure was very strong. I am not a big fan of extremely dry red wines yet, so this was not my favorite.
  • Chambourcin Reserve: This dry red was also part of the Premium Wine Collection and had won three gold medals. According to Connie, this wine has a low level of tannins. It had oaky but sweet notes. It also had notes of dark fruits like plums and was well balanced. For a dry red, I surprisingly enjoyed this wine and would definitely drink it again!
  • Breton Bay Shoals: This sweet red wine was my absolute favorite of all the wines I tasted. In fact, I ended up coming home with a bottle of it! It has fresh and fruity notes with a lemony smell. It was very clean and crisp and I definitely detected notes of peaches and citrus when tasting it. According to Connie this wine would pair well with Italian dishes, and I plan to try that when I open my bottle. I absolutely LOVED this wine!
  • Autumn Frost: This sweeter white wine was part of the Premium Wine Collection. It was light, sweet, and fruity...almost candy-like. For me, this wine was very easy to drink and I could see it pairing well with dessert! It had notes of pineapple and crisp apples. It was very luscious without being too heavy, and I found it very delicious. I would definitely drink this wine again.

My purchase from Port of Leonardtown Winery- yum!

My tasting card of wines to try and space for notes

Visiting the Port of Leonardtown Winery was absolutely a great experience. Although it is a smaller winery, for my first winery trip it definitely impressed me! It was so interesting to hear about how they make their wine and the long process and hard work that goes into making just one bottle of wine. Tasting wines with my parents was an enjoyable experience because my dad is pretty knowledgeable about wine and he enjoys exposing me to new wines now that I am of legal age! I was also pleased that I found a wine (Breton Bay Shoals) that I liked enough to buy. Our guide, Connie, made the experience extremely pleasant and joked around with me about Virginia Tech because she went to Radford years ago. I would love to go back to Port of Leonardtown Winery again when the weather is nicer and I can take advantage of sampling wines on the patio and walk around the beautiful kayak trail. They also offer special events, like food pairings with chocolate truffles or seafood, that I would love to attend. Overall, I had a surprisingly enjoyable and educational experience at Port of Leonardtown Winery in Southern Maryland.

Me with my new Port of Leonardtown wine glass!

Tasting- Cascina Gilli Bonarda

Name: Cascina Gilli Bonarda
Variety: 100% Piemonte Bonarda
Region: Piedmont region
Country: Italy
Year: 2007
Price: $11.95

Winery Review: Nose of red berry fruit enriched by nuances of spice, subtle but recognizable. The slight effervescence of Moye increases the appeal of its palate, bringing out its freshness without compromising its complexity. Served chilled, it is wonderful with marinates and stews, or with Piedmont's traditional fritto misto.

My Review: I enjoyed this wine more than I thought I would for such a dry wine. Upon tasting it, it instantly dried up my mouth but the fruit flavors were very pleasant. I tasted notes of blackberries and dark cherries along with some woody, oaky flavors. It had a very tannic structure and a full finish, making it an appealing wine that was more drinkable than most super dry reds.

Tasting- Joseph Carr Pinot Noir

Name: Joseph Carr Pinot Noir
Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
Region: Sonoma Coast, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2007

Winery Review: Ever-elusive, our Central Coast Pinot Noir offers cherry, and dark wild raspberry in both the bouquet and taste. I also find aromatic violets, tea, strawberry seed, and hits of mushroom. The wine shows very good structure with balanced, yet approachable tannin.

My Review: This wine was very smooth and had earthy notes. I tasted a hint of dirt, but in a good way. I also tasted notes of plum and dark fruits. It was semi sweet and was very drinkable. I would absolutely drink this wine again.

Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Intense and fine, dominated by notes of red berries. The combination of fine bubbles and delicate aromas makes this a delightfully light and silky rose. Aromas in the mouth evoke red berries, cherries, and strawberries: mellow and well-balanced.

My Review: Out of all the wines I tried at the Vintage Cellar, this was by far my favorite. It had notes of peaches and was fresh and fruity. It was very drinkable and balanced, and just sweet enough without being too sweet. I would absolutely drink this wine again!

Tasting- Fortediga Vermentino

Name: Fortediga Vermentino
Variety: 100% Vermentino
Region: Maremma, Tuscany
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: Clear yellow in color. The aromas are lifted with pleasant hits of pear and green apple. The fresh, smooth flavors on the entry persist, the structure is fine and balances well with the fruit.

My Review: I found this wine to be decent, but not my favorite. It was pretty dry and when I first sniffed it, I detected a floral aroma. After tasting it, I tasted a hint of citrus and again some floral notes. The aftertaste was somewhat strange, and I found it to be unpleasant. I would probably not drink this wine again.

Tasting- Nopa Vinho Verde

Name: Nopa Vinho Verde
Variety: 50% Arinto, 50% Azal

Winery Review: The result is elegant, silky, fresh and well-balanced, with a fine citrus brightness. Ideal as an aperitif or as a perfect accompaniment to seafood, poultry, pasta, salads, spicy oriental food and grilled white meat. Enjoy in moderation and in good company.

My Review: I found this wine to be sweet and sugary tasting. It was very light and refreshing, with notes of light fruits like citrus and pineapple. It would definitely be an enjoyable summertime wine. It was very balanced and drinkable.

Tasting- Allegrini Renacer Enamore

Name: Allegrini Renacer Enamore
Variety:  Blend of Malbec (60%), Cabernet Franc (20-25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), with minor proportions of Syrah and Bonarda
Region: Mendoza region
Country: Argentina
Year: 2009
Price: $29.95

Winery Review: 89 Points, Wine Spectator. Think Amarone. This is a ripe, concentrated red, with nuances of cocoa, sweet spice and licorice accenting a core of jammy blackberry, raspberry and plum skin notes, which linger through the long, savory finish. Drink now. 1,800 cases imported. -NW

My Review: This wine was one of the driest I have ever tasted. I detected strong notes of blackberry throughout the wine. The wine had a very bold and full flavor. Good tannins and a balanced finish. Although I am just beginning to try some more red wines and get used to the dryness, overall I would drink this wine again because of its dark fruity flavor!

Tasting- Terra Sparkling Malbec

Name: Terra Sparkling Malbec
Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $13.95

Winery Review: Intense red with blue tones and a very bright, giving origin to violet bubbles. Red fruits in nose, cranberry, plums, and a touch of toasted bread and almond, which are the typical red wine aromas. It has a balanced acidity and sugar. Adorned with red fruits, a lot of greasiness and tannins that give a firm structure which characterizes the Malbec wine.

My Review: This Malbec wine had a very strong aroma of dark fruits, like plum and blackberry. For a red, it tasted surprisingly fruity. These berry flavors combined with an unexpected sweetness making the wine nicely balanced. I did not detect any hint of what could be called "greasiness" but it was a heavier red, in my opinion.

I tasted this wine on its own without food.

Tasting- Takutai Pinot Noir

Name: Takutai Pinot Noir
Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $14.95

Winery Review: Spicy cherry, raspberry, and wild rose aromas with toasty, licorice oak in support. On the palate the wine exhibits soft fruit tannins, delicate structure, and a good balance. A highly likeable, flavor packed wine for consumers new to the delights of the Pinot grape.

My Review: Not my favorite wine I tried at the Vintage Cellar, but that is because I've been exposed to very few reds. I detected dark plum aromas with some earthy flavors. I definitely detected a woody, smoky flavor as well. The wine had a good tannin structure and a nice finish. I would drink this wine again.

I tasted this wine with a couple small pieces of cheese, which I definitely thought brought out the woody, oaky flavors of the wine on the second sip.

Tasting- Takutai Riesling

Name: Takutai Riesling
Variety: 100% Riesling
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $14.95

Winery Review: Sweet floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle combine with grapefruit and lemon characters underpinned by a mineral thread. With a splash of residual sweetness, this wine tickles your palate and makes you ask for more. The sweet entry is balanced by a bright acidity and retained spritziness, which give the wine crispness and "liveliness". It has great length and is at once mouth-filling and refreshing.

My Review: I found this half-dry Riesling to be very palatable because of its fresh fruity flavors. It tasted slightly citrus-like and very bold. It was just sweet enough without being too sweet, I think I found it to be a little less sweet than described above. I did detect a certain crispness to the wine, probably even more so because it was served extremely cold.

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting- Takutai Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Takutai Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $14.95

Winery Review: 88 points, Wine Spectator. A juicy and vibrant white, this delivers spiced pear and apple flavors that have a mouthwatering lemony note. Shades of fresh-cut grass and herb chime in on the finish. Drink now. 1500 cases made. -MW

My Review: This wine was my favorite of all the ones I tasted at the Vintage Cellar! It tasted somewhat dry in my mouth and was semisweet. Doing the sniff and swirl, I definitely detected a combination of flavors, mostly fruity. I thought it had a zesty flavor to it, which made it pleasant to drink. I did not try it with food, but I definitely would in the future, as I think it would pair well with many dinners.
